Filament length and weight calculator
1 kg of 1.75 mm PLA is about 335 meters of filament, and a meter of it weighs about 2.98 grams. Convert any weight to length and back for your material and diameter, then check how much is left on a spool before you start a long print.
Filament length per kilogram
Meters in 1 kg and grams per meter at typical densities. Brands differ by a few percent, so for an exact figure use the density on your filament's data sheet in the calculator.
| Material | Density, g/cm³ | 1.75 mm: m per kg | 1.75 mm: g per m | 2.85 mm: m per kg | 2.85 mm: g per m |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PLA | 1.24 | 335 m | 2.98 g | 126 m | 7.91 g |
| PETG | 1.27 | 327 m | 3.05 g | 123 m | 8.10 g |
| ABS | 1.04 | 400 m | 2.50 g | 151 m | 6.63 g |
| ASA | 1.07 | 389 m | 2.57 g | 146 m | 6.83 g |
| TPU | 1.21 | 344 m | 2.91 g | 130 m | 7.72 g |
| Nylon | 1.14 | 365 m | 2.74 g | 138 m | 7.27 g |
| PC | 1.20 | 346 m | 2.89 g | 131 m | 7.66 g |
How it's worked out
- Grams per meter = density × the filament's cross-section, π × (diameter ÷ 2)². With density in g/cm³ and diameter in mm, the answer comes out in grams per meter.
- Meters = grams ÷ grams per meter.
- Left on a spool = the scale reading minus the empty spool. Any kitchen scale that reads in 1 g steps will do, like the Etekcity 11 lb kitchen scale (Amazon).
Planning a big print? The 3D print cost calculator turns the grams into a price, and the filament guide covers which plastic suits which prop.
Filament questions
How much filament is on a 1 kg roll?
1 kg of filament; the spool itself weighs extra. In length, 1 kg of 1.75 mm PLA is about 335 meters, PETG about 327 meters and ABS about 400 meters, because lighter plastics give more length per kilogram. The calculator works it out for any weight, material and diameter.
How many meters are in 1 kg of 1.75 mm PLA?
About 335 meters, using PLA's typical density of 1.24 g/cm³. In 2.85 mm filament the same kilogram is only about 126 meters, since each meter holds more plastic.
How much does 1 meter of filament weigh?
About 2.98 grams for 1.75 mm PLA. Multiply the meters your slicer reports by that to get grams, or let the calculator do it for your material.
How do you tell how much filament is left on a spool?
Weigh the spool and subtract the weight of an empty spool of the same brand: what's left is filament. Enter both in the spool check to get grams and meters left, and compare with the weight your slicer shows for the print before you start a long one.
How long is 1 kg of PETG?
About 327 meters in 1.75 mm, a little shorter than PLA because PETG is slightly denser.
Results are estimates from typical densities and the numbers you enter.
