Press-Fit or Screws? Why Each PropBuilds Kit Differs

Aug 10, 2026 · 5 MIN READ

Pick press-fit if you want a tool-free build that finishes in about ten minutes: that means the Hackable Crate. Pick screws if you want moving parts and a model that handles being picked up: that means the Shotgun Trap or the Minicopter. That is the whole decision. The rest of this guide is the detail behind it.

The short version: PropBuilds sells three Rust display kits built two different ways. The Hackable Crate is press-fit: 26 printed parts that snap together with no glue, screws, or tools, in 5 to 10 minutes. The Shotgun Trap and Minicopter are screw-built with M4 screws and an included Allen key, which takes longer (15 to 25 minutes) but holds tighter and, on the Minicopter, lets the rotor, tail propeller, and wheels actually spin. Neither method is better. They suit different builders.

What Press-Fit Actually Means

Each panel is printed with male and female features tuned to a specific tolerance. Line two parts up, push, and they seat with a clean snap. No glue, no screws, no tools. If you have pressed two LEGO bricks together, you know the motion.

The trick is in the tolerance window. Too tight and the panels lock up halfway. Too loose and the joint wobbles. The sweet spot is narrow, which is why every kit is printed, quality-checked, and packed in small batches in the same workshop. The build is meant to feel effortless. The engineering to get there is not.

Open the bag, start building, and inside ten minutes you have a finished display piece. There is no drying time and no tool to keep hold of.

What Screw-Fastened Means

The screw-built kits use M4 screws and an Allen key, both included in the box. More parts in the bag, more steps, and a fastener ritual: spin the screw in, set the key down, pick up the next panel. The build runs longer. In return the finished piece holds its alignment when handled, and it supports moving parts that press-fit cannot.

You can press two flat panels together and call them done. You cannot press a rotor into a hub and expect it to keep spinning cleanly. On the Minicopter, everything that moves turns on a screw fastening, which is why that kit ships with 29 of them.

The downside is time and tracking. A 25-minute build is a different commitment from a 10-minute one, and a screw dropped on carpet has a way of disappearing. Both screw kits include spare screws for that reason.

The Trade-Offs, Side by Side

Press-Fit Screws
Build time 5 to 10 minutes 15 to 25 minutes
Tools None Allen key (included)
Fasteners Zero M4 screws, plus spares in the box
Moving parts No Yes (rotor, propeller, wheels on the Minicopter)
Durability Good for display Handles being moved
PropBuilds difficulty scale 1 (Easy) 2 to 3 (Medium)

Both construction styles carry the same note on their product pages: decorative display kits with small parts, recommended for teens and adults.

Why Each Kit Uses What It Uses

Three kits, one press-fit, two screw-built.

Hackable Crate - Press-Fit, 26 parts, 5 to 10 min

A chunky box with flat panels and crisp corner detailing. No moving parts, nothing that needs a fastener, so press-fit fits it perfectly, and the result is the most beginner-friendly kit in the lineup: difficulty 1 on the PropBuilds scale. Two rubber bands ship in the box as cosmetic crate straps, and the military crates inside double as small storage.

Shotgun Trap - Screws, 20 parts, 15 to 20 min

The first step into screw-built territory. The kit ships with M4 mounting screws sorted in a parts bag, an Allen key sized for them, and spares in case one vanishes into the carpet. Screw construction means you can move it shelf to shelf without anything working loose. The full walkthrough is in the Shotgun Trap assembly guide.

Minicopter - Screws, 38 parts, 29 M4 screws, 20 to 25 min

The Minicopter is screw-built because parts of it have to move. Its product page puts it plainly: the main rotor, rear propeller, and wheels rotate freely by hand. All of that runs on the 29 M4 screws in the box, tightened once with the included Allen key. It is the longest build in the catalog and the highest on the difficulty scale, and what you are paying for is motion. The full design story is in the Minicopter build write-up.

Which One Is Right for You

  • First build, done in one sitting: press-fit. Start with the Hackable Crate.
  • Buying a gift for someone who is not a maker: press-fit. No tools to own, nothing to get wrong.
  • Want a model that moves on the desk: screws. The Minicopter is the only kit with free-spinning parts.
  • Want the build itself to be the fun part: screws. The Shotgun Trap is the sweet spot, still under 20 minutes.
  • Stepping up from a press-fit kit: Shotgun Trap is the bridge, Minicopter is the destination.

One number worth knowing before you choose: as of August 10, 2026, the three kits hold 18 customer reviews between them, and construction method has not decided a single star. The screw-built Minicopter averages 4.9 across 10 reviews, while the press-fit Hackable Crate (6 reviews) and the screw-built Shotgun Trap (2 reviews) both sit at 5.0.

Common Questions

Do PropBuilds kits need glue?

No. The press-fit Hackable Crate assembles with no glue, screws, or tools at all, and the screw-built kits fasten with the M4 screws and Allen key included in the box. Everything you need to build is in the box.

How long does each kit take to build?

The Hackable Crate takes 5 to 10 minutes, the Shotgun Trap 15 to 20, and the Minicopter 20 to 25. Those are the build times published on each product page, and every kit is designed to finish in one sitting.

Do the screw kits include the tools?

Yes. Both screw-built kits ship with their M4 screws, an Allen key sized for them, and spare screws in the box. There is nothing to buy separately.

Which Rust kit is best for a first build?

The Hackable Crate. It is press-fit, 26 parts, difficulty 1 on the PropBuilds scale, and finishes in under ten minutes with no tools.
